Steven Kennedy was born and raised in the Irish Channel of New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child he would walk out to St. Charles Avenue during Mardi Gras and watch the great Carnival Krewes roll towards downtown.
He began playing guitar when he was 13. Steven learned the basics of guitar and blues from his older brother Michael and also gained from “sitting in” with his uncle, Mississippi blues guitarist, Larry Coney’s band.
Steven completed his double-emphasis masters degree in Guitar Performance and Music Theory and Composition in 2006. Later that year, Steven made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Mississippi Guitar Quartet. Steven has been featured on numerous radio shows including MPB’s “Mississippi Soundstage” and WRTI’s “Crossover” in Philadelphia, PA.
Steven has completed his Orff-Schulwerk Level I and II courses under the tutelage of Konnie Saliba, Jos Wuytack and Deanna Stark at the University of Memphis. Steven recently had his first book published with Beatin’ Path Publications entitled “Crescent City Collection.” The book consists of originals and covers of New Orleans music for 4th-8th grade marimba band.
He is now a music teacher/department chair at Morris Jeff Community School where he teaches general music and directs a marimba ensemble that recently performed at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Steven is also a featured guitarist in many theatre productions in the New Orleans area including : RENT, Grease, Godspell, Spring Awakening, Seussical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Tick Tick Boom, Cabaret, Zanna Don't, Musical of the Living Dead, Footloose, Bye Bye Birdie, 13, Class of 70 Something, Lizzie, Shrek, Addams Family, Big River, Heathers, Sweet Charity, Will Rogers Follies, The Wiz, Big Fish, Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors and is the guitarist for the Big Easy Boys, a "throwback" vocal quartet that plays in the New Orleans area. He also sat in with performance group and PBS performers Under the Streetlamp at L'Auberge in Baton Rouge, LA to fill in for their touring guitarist.
As a composer, Steven completed the score for the feature film "Tinker" in 2016 starring Clayne Crawford (Lethal Weapon TV Series) and two short film scores "Slow Buttery Death" and "Book of Snake."
Steven was recently featured in an article about guitarists who score music for film/television in the April 2015 edition of "Guitar Player" magazine.
